Interviews with Knoll Designers Florence Knoll, Harry Bertoia, Herbert Matter, Richard Schultz, Marcel Breuer and Robert Venturi are Highlighted

The January/February 2015 issue of Art Papers, the independent critical voice covering contemporary art and culture, celebrates the Knoll design heritage with excerpts from a collection of interviews from the Knoll Archives.

The issue includes interviews with Florence Knoll, Harry Bertoia, Gordon Bunschaft, Peter Blake, George Nelson, Herbert Matter, Richard Schultz, Marcel Breuer and Robert Venturi, sourced from the Knoll Archives collection of 60 interviews conducted between 1977 and 1979.

The piece, “The Knoll Transcripts,” highlights “an oral history, told by some of the 20th century’s great designers, that maps a network of their close-knit personal and professional relationships,” writes Margot Weller of Art Papers. The interviews were conducted by “architect and later TED founder Richard Saul Wurman, the late graphic designer Massimo Vignelli, and longtime Knoll executive Christine Rae.”

The transcripts were originally compiled for “an A-to-Z compendium, [which] were ultimately excerpted and appear sparingly in the 1981 book Knoll Design, edited by Eric Larrabee and Massimo Vignelli,” writes Weller.
