hen the University of Pittsburgh Department of Africana Studies came to Workscape in hopes of updating their offices, there were several key considerations to be made. It was important to reflect the personality and mission of Africana Studies Department with color, texture, and aesthetic. Furthermore, the space needed to be cohesive and refined. To make this happen, Workscape, GBBN and Pitt worked together bring the department’s ideas to life. Careful attention was paid to the seating options and a “chair family” was developed to maintain continuity throughout the space. Art display rails were installed throughout the space for easy access to switch out departmental artwork. Maximum storage in rich walnut with a clean white accent was provided in Knoll offices. Fun and colorful furniture pieces were scattered throughout to add character, and the gorgeous, Nucraft conference table anchors the space. Overall, the design is a striking balance between function and beauty. It reflects sophistication with a nod to heritage.
